    • Molecular plant breeding as the foundation for 21st century crop improvement
    • The authors review the evolution of plant breeding and how advances in the understanding of plant biology, different areas of genetics and, more recently, genomics created the scientific base for modern MB. In addition to a technical analysis of what MB offers, they go on to analyse the issue of limited applicability and discuss that amongst other reasons, education and increased investment in plant breeding capacity are essential to realise the potential of modern technologies for future crop improvement.

    • Resources and priorities for plant biotechnology research in India
    • This publication acknowledges the positive response of the Indian government as it relates to investments in research infrastructure, research support and the necessary regulatory framework as solid commitment with modern biotechnology. Its main objective though is the assessment of research capacity in the field of plant biotechnology at national level. Priorities of crops and traits, institutional involvement and quality of outputs are reviewed. It concludes that the research landscape in contemporary India fits well with the country's agricultural development needs, whilst it asserts the requirement for more advanced research in collaboration with applied institutions so that full advantage can be drawn from the investments.

    • Orphan legume crops enter the genomics era!
    • An excellent review of the outcome of recent efforts of the international community to enhance the number of available genomic resources of neglected legume crops (chickpeas, common beans, cowpea, groundnuts, lentils and pigeonpeas). The paper lists known germplasm collections and genomic resources covering markers, libraries, sequences, maps and functional genomics tools. At present, these assets represent a very promising basis for accelerated molecular breeding of these crops.

    • Assessment of technology generating institutions in biotechnology innovation system of South-Eastern Nigeria
    • This paper analyses the limited outcomes of biotechnological research in Nigeria considering time invested in these activities. It addresses the limited coverage given to certain research subjects fundamental for food security by discussing the high influence of donor's agendas in determining the thematic research areas prioritised in institutions. At the same time, the authors point to the poor connection with end-users which inhibits technological development. They recommends greater involvement by governments and adopting innovative system approaches to improve biotechnological research.
