    • A similar result has been observed previously by us in the Wittig reaction of triphenylphosphoranylidene-acetaldehyde with 4, 2′R,3′R,4′R,5′S-3′,4′-bis(benzyloxyc arbonyl)-5′-O-benzoyl oxymethyl-pyrrolidine-2′-yl]but-3-en-2-one, a 2,5-dideoxy-2,5-imino-d-glucitol (DGDP) derivative. Franco, F. Ph.D. Dissertation, Univ. of Granada, Spain, 2004. Moreover, to confirm this hypothesis, a sample of aldehyde 9 was refluxed in PhMe for 24 h. The resulting mixture was evaporated to a residue, redissolved in anhyd. MeOH and reduced with NaBH4. After processing the reaction, only alcohol 8 was isolated, and no traces of the 5-epi-8 were detected by NMR.{A figure is presented
