New York; August 21-23, 2009. The differentiation between emotional and cognitive empathy prompted this first exploration of empathic functioning in patients with NPD. Results suggest deficits in emotional empathic capability and intact cognitive empathic functioning in NPD. The authors encourage a multidimensional assessment of empathy in NPD and reformulation of the corresponding DSM diagnostic criteria.
