    • Note
    • In particular, 82% of the actors in the sample analysed (which includes 20 firms operating in the shipbuilding industries and 11 institutional and local bodies located in the shipbuilding clusters of Livorno and Viareggio) declare they are fully satisfied about that. Good evaluations are also given about scientific competencies, although in this case there is still a 23% of partners who declare they are unsatisfied with it. The absence of trust and the existence of a possible disagreement of interests concern respectively only 8 and 16% of the interviewed. Further details can be found in [11].

    • Note
    • In particular, the evaluation of the workforce is the only issue recording no negative results, and the one concerning the competencies of specialised suppliers presents the most positive judgments; theories about localization of firms in geographical clusters would seem confirmed.

    • Note
    • Unfortunately, we were not able to carry out a more updated analysis, because censuses are held every ten years and the next one is in 2011; these constitute, in fact, the only sufficiently exhaustive source for building an analysis of LQs, although they only give information about the final balance, and not the flows (births and deaths) of clusters.

    • Note
    • At first sight, these numbers seem rather small, but one should also consider those who work illegally on commission, for whom it is rather hard to give an acceptable approximation. Also, our survey takes into account only those activities that are directly related to the building of pleasure and sporting boats, and leaves out others, such as the tourist services associated to the sector either directly (cruises and boat excursions) or indirectly (hotels, restaurants, and the like).

    • A further expansion might be made in the future by considering other cross-sector items, and include links with the tourism and leisure time industries, or other sectors.
