This study confirmed that OCT offers important diagnostic clues in patients with NMO. The analysis of the OCT findings in 35 patients with NMO showed that a significant correlation existed between visual acuity and OCT findings. Specifically, the mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was significantly reduced in patients with NMO (77.5mm in the right eye and 78.3mm in the left eye) compared with controls (101.9mm in the right eye and 102.8 mm in the left eye, P<0.001). Furthermore, a significant correlation was demonstrated between OCT results and visual field defects (r=-0.78, P<0.001), visual acuity (r=-0.36, P<0.01) and visual evoked potential latencies (r=0.57, P<0.001).
