We used a crude mixture of rac-2 and meso-2 (ca. 2:1) for the spectrophotometric and electrochemical measurements in order to facilitate comparison of the properties with those of an equilibrium mixture of rac-4 and meso-4 in nitromethane (and presumably in acetonitrile, too). It can also be assumed that the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of these rac and meso diastereoisomers are not significantly different.
