    • Here I am taking Nick Moon's definition of public opinion polls: "the definition of an opinion poll is more broad than voting intention, and less broad than any topic under the sun [⋯] the opinion in public opinion polls must be about political or social topics [⋯] they must be about matters that are in the general public interest" and "to count as a opinion poll rather than a random collection of anecdotal information, there must be some form of scientific approach." • Clear and compelling evidence: The polish tribunal on abortion rights
    • From 1956 the provisions of the Abortion Admissibility Law had allowed the termination of pregnancy for medical reasons, in case of rape or incest, or in the case of a woman's "difficult living conditions." These provisions had been interpreted liberally to include abortion on socioeconomic and therapeutic grounds. • Between ideology, politics, and common sense: The discourse of reproductive rights in Poland
    • Despite the similarity of provisions, there are significant differences between the 1956 Abortion Admissibility Law and the 1996 liberalization amendment. The liberalization amendment specifies a twelve-week time limit for abortions performed for social or legal reasons; there is a mandatory consultation and a waiting period of three days for the woman seeking an abortion; and there are harsher penalties for illegal abortions after twenty-four weeks. All of these provisions marked the 1996 amendment as less liberal than the 1956 law. • Nowelizacja ustawy antyaborcyjnej i jej konsekwencje [Amendment of the anti-abortion law and its consequences], CBOS Opinion Bulletin (Warsaw: CBOS, November 1996). All of the 1996 bulletins report on public attitudes toward abortion; however, some do so in the context of wider framing issues, such as possible topics for inclusion in a referendum, or the relationship between attitude to abortion and attitude to the Concordat, privatization, and unemployment. The remainder of the bulletins report on attitudes toward abortion in the narrower but perhaps more immediate context of then-current legislative attempts to liberalize abortion policy.

    • For example, one opinion poll states in its introduction that it sets out to chart the dynamic influence of the abortion debate on public opinion: "Similarly to two months ago, we asked respondents about the characteristic of their opinion of the method of legal regulation of abortion. This made it possible to trace how the current ongoing substantial debate around the amendment to the anti-abortion law has affected on public opinion" (CBOS, Nowelizacja ustawy antyaborcyjnej, 2).
