    • A distinction is conventionally made between 'gender' and 'sex' with the former relating to the roles played by men and women and the latter referring more to their biological differences. In this paper I maintain that distinction, but use the term 'gender inequality' to refer also to the difference in health outcomes between men and women, and in particular, the difference in life expectancy
