Stentless porcine valves in the right ventricular outflow tract: Improved durability
-
discussion 604-605. This study analyzes intermediate-term performance of stentless porcine valves in the right ventricular outflow tract in 150 children and adults over a 10-year period and concludes that these valves function well in the pulmonary position over the intermediate term and are associated with low rates of reintervention in patients requiring a more than 19-mm valve or valved conduit. Longer-term follow-up and comparison with other alternatives will be necessary to determine whether these valves are superior to commonly used allograft or bovine jugular venous valved conduits

Pulmonary bioprosthesis: Morphologic findings in 40 cases
-
This study analyzes a consecutive series of 40 explanted nonhomograft pulmonarysite bioprostheses. The authors conclude that 'Explanted bioprostheses showed a high degree of calcification and pannus, which together led to stenosis. Cusp immobilization, involving all three cusps, was frequent and was more common in patients younger than 30 years of age at explantation (P≤0.001). Host-tissue overgrowth is a significant problem with bioprostheses, and pulmonary-site bioprostheses are no exception'.

Polytetrafluoroethylene bicuspid pulmonary valve implantation
-
This study describes the operative technique used in the largest series of patients undergoing PVR with a man-made hand-sewn PTFE bicuspid valve. At present, there are more than 110 patient implants with follow-up extending out to 8 years. Initially, the valve was made from porous 0.6-mm PTFE, but the current technique utilizes nonporous 0.1-mm PTFE, which does not allow cellular ingrowth and thickening
