    • note
    • 1/2 for the temperature to fall to half its initial value is 32 μs. On the basis of the initial slope of cooling, this calculation predicts 10% cooling in 3.2 μs, much shorter than the observed time for the slow process to be completed. However, imperfections in the thermal continuity of the film, which are evident in high-magnification images (see Figures 1 and 3), are expected to retard the diffusion process relative to the ideal theoretical calculation, consistent with the observation. Moreover, it is evident from this calculation that the process associated with the 220 ns time constant is complete before significant diffusive cooling of the heated specimen can occur.
