    • However, this cannot lead to substantial error in the estimation of σ for individual chains herein
    • Every monomer unit of MEH-PPV does not contribute equally to the absorption cross section at a certain wavelength since the chromophores of MEH-PPV possess different absorption spectra depending on their conjugation lengths. However, as an ensemble of chromophores, a typical single MEH-PPV chain is already large enough to resemble the same (at least similar) absorption profile as a bulk sample, with absorption intensity proportional to the ensemble size. Therefore, the average absorption cross section per monomer unit should be nearly constant for different MEH-PPV chains. The diversity in absorption spectrum at single-chain level was further averaged out when comparing the fluorescence brightness coefficient (B) averaged over many single molecules. Note that the ensemble absorption spectrum of isolated MEH-PPV chains could be different to that of a MEH-PPV bulk film. See details in: Mirzov, O.; Scheblykin, I. G. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2006, 8, 5569-5576. However, this cannot lead to substantial error in the estimation of σ for individual chains herein.

    • We did not find any sign of a short lifetime component in fluorescence decay of non-photodamaged MEH-PPV single molecules. Even if there was a fluorescence decaying faster than 10 ps (our resolution limit), its contribution to the total fluorescence signal was negligible (10% or less)
