    • FEMM4.2 by David Meeker of Foster-Miller Inc. Version 4.2 is in the public domain and may be downloaded from, This is a two-dimensional magnetic field solver. Version 4.2 also solves other single-variable problems such as Electrostatics (Capacitance) and Heat Flow. It was used to calculate Transformer Inductance, Conductor Losses, Current Distribution and Magnetic Field Energy among other things. The restriction to two dimensions means that the transformers have to be modelled as an axi-symmetric stack of rings but this is not so different from the real structures on the PCB layers

    • FastModel: This is a packaging of FastHenry from the Research Laboratory of Electronics at M.I.T (〈http://www.fastfieldsolvers.com/main.htm〉). It is a three-dimensional solver, able to extract Self and Mutual Inductances over a range of frequencies and .present the results as an impedance matrix. The program is widely used, but being limited to straight-line segment approximations. It has proved very useful for analysing the impedance of interconnect structures and wire bond arrays.
