    • Possible involvement of SINEs in mammalian-specific brain formation
    • In this work, the authors identified a new SINE family that is highly conserved among the genomes of Amniota (mammals, birds, and reptiles). They also showed that a particular instance from this family, 178 kbp away from the gene FGF8, acts as an enhancer and can replicate the expression of that gene in two regions of the developing forebrain.

    • Mobile elements create structural variation: analysis of a complete human genome
    • The authors performed a systematic evaluation of the impact of mobile element-associated structural variation in a newly completed human genome and found that ∼10% of the new indels (insertions/deletions) larger than 100 bp were associated with TEs.

    • Mapping and sequencing of structural variation from eight human genomes
    • In this paper, the authors used a paired-end sequencing strategy to look at structural variation in eight human genomes. When looking for a mechanism underlying these variants, the authors determined that nonallelic homologous recombination between repeated sequences could account for 47% of the events identified.
