Such a list is necessary because there is no consensus about what this geographic region, or even large parts of it, should be called. The term Eastern (or East) Europe, for example, was formerly used by Westerners to refer to the European Warsaw Pact countries that were not part of the Soviet Union. The citizens of many of those countries found the term demeaning and most find it even more so now. In addition, it is no longer clear even exactly which countries are meant. Does the term, for example, include Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova?
