    • This is the first study of its kind in Africa. It categorizes fire patterns in the continent south of the equator, using remote sensing, climate, and ecological methods. The study established that there are regions of low rainfall where fire is rare, regions where fire is under human control and regions of higher rainfall where burnt area is determined by rainfall seasonality.

    • Long-term fire frequency not linked to prehistoric occupations in northern Swedish boreal forest
    • The authors used charcoal analysis in northern Swedish boreal forest to reconstruct the pattern of fire frequency over the last 11 000 years. The study found that the Holocene period was characterized by periods of very long fire-free intervals (300 years on average) with periods of relatively high fire occurrence, between 7500 and 4500 and after 2500 years BP. The long fire-free intervals consistent over the study were attributed to very low frequency of ignition sources that are linked to lightning.

    • This study makes a major contribution toward understanding global patterns of fire. The authors used mapped global patterns of charcoal abundance and peaks in charcoal accumulation at 3000-year intervals since the Last Glacial Maximum. They concluded that changes in fire regimes since the LGM were driven by broad-scale changes in climate forcing.

    • The study used pollen and charcoal records to investigate the response of oak and pine species dominated vegetation and fire regimes to climatic changes of the past 1200 years in northwestern Wisconsin. Their results showed between 700 and 600 years BP there was a change in vegetation toward mesic taxa which was consistent with results of other studies, suggesting increased moisture and lower fire activity during that period.

    • Influences of climate on fire regimes in montane forests of north-western Mexico
    • The authors reconstructed fire occurrence for a 290-year period from crossdated fire-scarred samples extracted from live trees, snags, and logs. Superposed epoch analysis was used to examine the relationships of tree-ring reconstructions of drought, the ENSO and the PDO oscillations with fire occurrence and extent. Among their findings were two periods of unusually high fire activity (1770-1800 and 1920-1950). Both were followed by several decades of unusually low fire activity. They concluded that the switch in each case was associated with strong phase changes in both PDO and ENSO.
