    • Sustainable health for all by the year 2100
    • Butler has picked up King's idea (see King, 1990 [2]) of demographic entrapment, and explored the serious prospect of a new 'global Dark Age' occurring if (economic) business-as-usual is followed. Unsustainable demands on the natural environment, and the ensuing social disruption and upheavals due to collapse of nature's supports for human health and social cohesion, could engender such a regression and deterioration in the human condition, he argues.

This volume brings together a wide range of insights, theories and ideas - from many different disciplinary and philosophical perspectives - about the intimate relationship between environmental conditions, life-support processes and health. The title conveys the essential message: that environmental sustainability is about maintaining the conditions necessary for healthy life. The implications for value systems, social codes and forms of governance are addressed.

    • GHF, Geneva 116 pp. This report draws attention to the 'human face' of global climate change. It seeks, explicitly, to influence the balance, the profile, of the international public discourse on climate change, so that the implications for human experience and survival are accorded more weight. The timing, mid-2009 (i.e., in the run-up to the important international climate change negotiations: COP15 in Copenhagen in December 2009), is not incidental. The report is not strong on systematic evidence, but has a clear narrative and an abundance of anecdotal and observational material that illustrate the future, if not already the present, human dimensions of climate change.

    • Global health equity and climate stabilisation-need for a common agenda
    • 10.1016/S0140-6736(08)61692-X. This paper argues the need to bring together the international research and policy agendas on global climate change (and its health impacts) and the current persistence - and risk of future exacerbation - of health inequalities and inequities. Research and policy momentum has been growing on both these fronts over the past decade, but they have yet to converge and reinforce one another.
