- A recent study by K. Katayama, D. C. Tsui, and M. Shayegan (private communication) of activation energies in the FQHE concludes that for an extended state of half-width γ < k T a prefactor 1/T must be invoked in ρxx(T). Such a prefactor changes our gap energies by less than 15% but would have no effect on the conclusions from our study.

- Both samples do not show the fine structure observed at ν = 1/2 in Ref. [13]. Since the mobility of sample B exceeds the mobility of the specimen of Ref. [13], it appears that a higher mu alone is not the determining factor for the presence of fine structure.
