Arthritis Rheum 2003, 48:1956-1963. This study examined concordance for SSc in monozygotic and dizygotic twins. Concordance for SSc was found to be similar in monozygotic and dizygotic twins, and overall concordance for SSc was low in the twins (4.7%). SSc-associated serum autoantibodies occurred exclusively in patients with SSc. The study showed that inheritance may play a role in the development of serum autoantibodies in the "healthy" twin sibling of a patient with SSc.

The authors of this study investigated whether the noninvasive determination of coronary flow reserve, as evaluated by transthoracic Doppler echocardiography, might be a potential method to detect early dysfunction of cerdiovascular system in 44 patients with SSc without clinical signs or symptoms of cardiac impairment. Coronary flow reserve was found to be lower in SSc patients, which may point to an indirect sign of heart involvement in SSc.

Arthritis Rheum 2003, 48:1363-1373. This article revisits the utility of the anti-Scl-70 ELISA in the care of patients with SSc. Contrary to some previous studies, the authors found that serum levels of anti-Scl-70 antibody (measured by ELISA) correlate positively with disease severity and disease activity in SSc.

In this study of Italian patients with SSc, the authors found anti-RNA-polymerase antibodies to be less frequent in Italian patients than in Caucasian patients from the United Kingdom or the United States. Also, anti-RNA-polymerase I and III antibodies were associated with diffuse cutaneous involvement and male gender.
