    • X-ray diffraction measurements were conducted in order to study the mesostructure of the silica after gold incorporation (at small-angle range), as well as the crystallinity of the gold NPs. The profiles of the diffraction patterns were similar for the three samples. As an example, those obtained for the sample S17 are represented in the Supporting Information (Fig. S1-5). The small-angle XRD pattern shows a peak at 2.3° associated to the hexagonal periodicity of the mesostructure, proving that mesoporosity is conserved after inclusion of the Au NPs. The crystallinity of the gold nanoparticles can be proven by the four peaks that are clearly observed in the XRD pattern (Fig. S1-5) and can be indexed to the (111), (200), (220), and (311) planes of the face-centered cubic structure of metallic gold (JCPDS, card no. 04-0784). The broad signal observed at 2θ = 20°-30° Can be associated with amorphous silica. The crystallite sizes of the gold nanoparticles calculated using the Scherrer equation were 2.3 and 8.4 nm respectively for the S19 and S17 samples. The low amount of nanoparticles grafted in the S18 sample did not allow for an accurate analysis of the gold size, but according to TEM images the average size is about 13 nm.
