Outcome and complications of long fusions to the sacrum in adult spine deformity: Luque- Galveston, combined iliac and sacral screws, and sacral fixation
-
This study included 54 consecutive patients who underwent elective combined anterior and posterior surgical reconstruction for adult spine deformity with three different techniques. The Luque-Galveston has an unacceptably high rate of pseudarthrosis. Currently, the author recommends either triangulated S1 screws in patients with good bone stock or the addition of iliac screws in others

Sixty-seven patients with bilateral sacral and iliac screws were reviewed with a minimum of 5 years follow-up. Only five cases of nonunion were observed; However, iliac screws had to be removed in 23 of the patients after 2 years follow-up.
