This is done to avoid numerical problems associated with the calculation of the exchange on the low filling side due to the singularity at μ=Δ. For small Δ, of course, there is an explicit symmetry between the two sides but for larger Δ, the ferromagnetic phase seems to have a larger extent on the high filling side compared to the low filling one.
