Self-expandable metal stents and trans-stent light delivery: Are metal stents and photodynamic therapy compatible?

This ex-vivo study showed that light delivery is reduced due to the shadow effect induced by metal stents. Tissue scattering can partly mitigate this effect. Therefore, PDT is feasible in metal stents if light dose is adjusted to compensate the reduction of light transmittance caused by the stent during treatment
