The term 'green-room' consultations came into vogue in the 1980s in the old GATT, when consultations among a few selected/invited ambassadors would be convened over difficult questions, and these meetings were held in the Conference Room of the GATT Director-General at the GATT headquarters in Centre William Rappard. The wallpaper was green and the 'consultations' were called 'green-room' consultations, a term that is used even now, though the wallpaper is now cream, and the meetings are held in bigger conference rooms.
