23. According to Leslie Morris, Curator of Manuscripts, Harvard’s Houghton Library has been creating finding aids since the late nineteenth century. The volume of data to be encoded and the variety of descriptive practices represented in that data are great. Therefore, for this institution and others on the Harvard campus, it is necessary to make certain EAD elements optional because such data is unavailable or it is too impractical to collect.
