21. Because the global phase of a quantum system is undetectable, qudit states II〉 and higher are used to emulate the spin, whereas the ground state 10〉 is reserved as phase reference. Hence, we emulated only up to spin-3/2, even though the 5-level qudit would map to an isolated spin-2.
