Pediatrics 2008; 121:e1489-e1494. This is a randomized, controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotics in preventing UTIs in children with VUR. Rates of UTIs and renal scars were the same in both groups. Thus, prophylactic antibiotics do not offer any benefit in the treatment of VUR.

This longitudinal study provides outcome data on a cohort of infants who underwent limited postnatal evaluation for isolated antenatal hydronephrosis. Infants with normal postnatal ultrasounds did not have voiding cystourethrograms or receive prophylactic antibiotics. Only one infant developed a UTI.
