Hong Kong's Gini coefficient-a standard measure of income inequality-moved in the direction of a less equal income distribution (from 0.43 to 0.53) between 1971 and 2007. The 2007 figure resembles a typical Gini coefficient from one of the world's poorer countries. Hong Kong is anything but that. According to the CIA World Factbook, the HKSAR in 2007 had an estimated per capita GNP of US$42,000, making it one of the planet's richest spots..
