This analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing database compares the survival of patients with parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease waiting for combined liver and intestine transplant to those patients listed for isolated intestine transplant. The authors found a higher relative odds of receiving transplantation, lower relative risk of dying while waiting for transplantation as well as higher long-term patient survival in those patients listed for isolated intestine transplantation compared with combined liver and intestine grafts. This single-center study compares the outcomes of the longitudinal intestinal lengthening procedure described by Bianchi with the more recently described STEP and found that both are effective in substantially improving enteral tolerance and lead to complete weaning of parenteral nutrition in more than 50% of individuals undergoing these surgeries. There was no clear advantage of one procedure over the other; however, the STEP was suggested as the technically easier procedure. (Pubitemid 47480606)

    • Safety and efficacy of a fish-oil-based fat emulsion in the treatment of parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease
    • This study describes a series of patients treated with a new fish oil-based lipid formulation instead of standard soy-based lipid formulation as the source of fat for their patients' parenteral nutrition requirements. Although there were differences in the amount of lipid and glucose administered in the two groups and the two cohorts were not sequential, but separated by a decade or more, which may have biased the study in favor of treatment, the resolution of cholestasis was dramatic in the treatment arm and suggests utility of this therapy

    • Intermediate outcomes after serial transverse enteroplasty in children with short bowel syndrome
    • This is a comprehensive review of the demographics of 11 out of 14 patients undergoing STEP at this center, revealing a 90% increase in remnant intestinal length after the surgery. In six patients with more thorough analysis, there was a reduction in parenteral nutrition requirements from 70% of calories to 12% at 1-year follow-up
