1. This book consists of two volumes, the first of which was published in 1998: The World of Knowledge, Thought and Beliefs in China Before the Seventh Century C.E. (Qi shiji qian Zhongguo de zhishi, sixiang yu xinyang shijie) (Shanghai: Fudan University).
2. The second volume was published in 2000: China's Knowledge, Thought, and Beliefs From the Seventh Until the Nineteenth Centuries C.E. (Qi shiji zhi shijiu shiji Zhongguo de zhishi, sixiang yu xinyang).
3. The author reflects on this question in the introduction to the first volume (which is translated in this issue), in the introduction and postscript to the second volume, and in other articles. For example: "Wearing a piece of clothing that does not fit - about the debates concerning the definitions of Chinese philosophy and Confucian religion" (Chuan yi jian chicun buhe de yisan - Guanyu zhongguo zhexue he rujiao dingyi de zhenglun), in Kaifang shidai 2001.11 (zhexue wenhua), 49-55.

5. By agreement with the author, the selections made for this journal have been largely restricted to the "axial period." The spring issue contains the following chapters: "The Confucians" (chapter 3), "The Mohists" (chapter 4), "The Daoists" (chapter 5), and the "Technical Arts and Their Significance in Intellectual History" (chapter 6).
