23. The hydrodynamic Froude number is given either by v2 /gL or sometimes by the square root of this quantity. It is usually physically explained as being the ratio of a speed v and the wave speed of a surface gravity wave of wavelength L, all squared. Of course, no gravity waves are involved in the formation of the washboard ripple pattern.
