Zola (Paris: Grasset, 1975), This intention is signalled from the start by the repetition of the earlier title. The maritime theme of the title, potentially translated as "lighthouses and fog horns" (although each of the two terms, feux and signaux de brume, has multiple resonances), was central to the essay on Zola and returns here in full force, since Woolf's Lighthouse (the word is consistently capitalized by her for reasons Serres explains as the argument proceeds) is the very emblem of Serres's rethinking of the philosophical positions he espoused in the earlier Zola essay.
