New York: Basic Books, The master-slave dialectic finds its foundations the work of 19th century philosopher G. W. F. Hegel. It has been employed and translated from critical scholarship which attempts to understand the complexities of power relations and relations of domination and subordination. Alexandre Kojeve provides for an Indication of Hegels interpretation and explains that a seminal aspect of this relationship is characterized by the needs of the dominant member to be recognized by the slave as the master. To do so, He must overcome him dialectically, That is, he must leave him life and consciousness, and destroy only his autonomy. He must overcome the adversary only Insofar as the adversary is opposed to him and acts against him. other words, he must enslave him. See
