Elgvin reported to me that he has examined 4Q174 under the microscope and determined that the visual evidence (at least in the visible spectrum) is ambiguous

Sharp has suggested Phinehas and his zealous opposition to intermarriage with Gentiles as a precedent for the entire message of 4QMMT in "Phinehas' Zeal and Rhetorical Strategy in 4QMMT," RevQ 18 (1997) 207-22. The overall importance of Phinehas to the sectarians must be bounded by the fact that he is mentioned by name only at 6Q13 1 4, a fragment which refers not to his zeal but rather to his priestly descendants
