    • Darwin's mistake: Explaining the discontinuity between human and nonhuman minds
    • Based on a critical review of the comparative cognitive psychology literature, the authors hypothesize that the cognitive discontinuity between human and nonhuman animals is largely due to the degree to which human and nonhuman minds are able to approximate the higher-order, systematic, relational capabilities of a physical symbol system. Refreshing and provocative look on animal cognition, its scopes and limits.

    • Top-down signal from prefrontal cortex in executive control of memory retrieval
    • In an ingenious monkey split-brain experiment, the authors provide a direct glimpse of top-down signals in the brain, as well as evidence that these signals emanate from the prefrontal cortex. Monkeys had to recall associated visual images stored in the inferior temporal cortex. In monkeys with only the callosal fibres connecting the prefrontal cortices in the two hemispheres left intact, the relevant visual information took a circuitous route, traveling from the opposite inferior temporal cortex (which could 'see' a cue) to the still connected prefrontal cortices, and then down to the 'blind' inferior temporal cortex.

    • Semantic associations between signs and numerical categories in the prefrontal cortex
    • Monkeys were trained to associate visual shapes with varying numbers of items in a matching task. The responses of many prefrontal neurons to the visual shapes reflected the associated numerical value in a behaviorally relevant way. In contrast, such association neurons were rarely found in the parietal lobe. These findings suggest a cardinal role of the prefrontal cortex in establishing semantic associations between signs and abstract categories.
