Dhimada K, Fujita M, Tanaka A, et al. Elevated serum C-reactive protein levels predict cardiovascular events in the Japanese coronary artery disease (JCAD) study. Circ J 2009; 73:78-85. In the JCAD research performed on 15628 patients with significant coronary stenosis, elevated serum level of CRP was clearly shown to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular events.

Ridker PM, Danilson E, Fonsea FAH, et al. Rosuvastatin to prevent events in men and women with elevated C-reactive protein. N Eng J Med 2008; 359:2195-2207. In the JUPITER trial, it was shown in 17 802 healthy participants without hyperlipidemia, but with high serum CRP protein levels, that the statin rosuvastatin, significantly decreased the incidence of major CVD events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes, in parallel to a reduction in LDL cholesterol levels by 50% and in high-sensitivity CRP levels by 37%.

In nondiabetic patients, metabolic syndrome was not associated with increased CVD, and it was the impaired fasting glucose that was a better predictor for future diabetes than metabolic syndrome

Rock W, Rosenblat M, Miller-Lotan R, et al. Consumption of won- derful variety pomegranate juice (PJ) and extract (POMxl) by diabetic patients increases paraoxonase 1 (PON 1) association with HDL and stimulates its catalytic activities. J Agric Food Chem 2008; 56:8704-8713. Pomegranate juice consumption by diabetic patients does not worsen their diabetic parameters, but rather increases PON1 association with HDL, stabilizes the enzyme, and increases its catalytic activities.
