The first name is due to the fact that the energy flux of these waves is codirected with the group velocity and thus antiparallel to the propagation direction given by vph. The second name reflects that the triplet given by the directions of the electric and magnetic fields along with the propagation direction vph is left handed contrary to the right-handed triplet in vacuum or ordinary dielectric.
