I subscribe here to the analyses developed by J. Derrida in his La voix et le phénomène (Paris: Presses Universitaires de France, 1967), and particularly to his description of the paradigmatic form of consciousness, as revealed in the Introduction. Yet I shall also wonder if the extent to which Husserl's later interpretation of the unity of the transcendental ego as temporal flow does not seriously undermine the possibility of holding onto a concept of consciousness as self-identical, self-present, and permanent.
