Chester AC, Sindwani R. Symptom outcomes in endoscopic sinus surgery: a systematic review of measurement methods. Laryngoscope 2007; 117:2239-2243. Symptom outcomes following ESS are measured by a variety of methods, including 18 validated survey instruments. Survey instruments measured results in 23% of studies, and individual symptom scores measured results in 31% of studies. (Pubitemid 351339603)

Sil A, Mackay I, Rowe-Jones J. Assessment of predictive prognostic factors for functional endoscopic sinus surgery in a 5-year prospective outcome study. Am J Rhinol 2007; 21:289-296. The authors searched for factors that might predict surgical success or failure. The results were remarkable largely for the absence of correlations found. They did note, however, that CT scores and polyp scores were predictive of the need for postoperative medication. (Pubitemid 46985136)

Mace J, Michael YL, Carlson NE, et al. Effects of depression on quality of life improvement after endoscopic sinus surgery. Laryngoscope 2008; 118:528-534. Depression is again associated with diminished QOL; however, the relative improvement following surgery is not diminished, thereby substantiating the worth of ESS in patients with depression. The effects of endoscopic sinus surgery on level of fatigue in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis
-
Fatigue severity was measured before and after ESS in patients with a variety of comorbidities. Patients having more severe fatigue noted more substantial improvement than patients having less severe fatigue. The fatigue of patients with fibromyalgia, an illness defined largely by fatigue and bodily pain, was more severe than that in the general study population but improved so substantially that the postoperative level of fatigue was indistinguishable from the postoperative level in study patients without fibromyalgia.
