    • Rapid telomere movement in meiotic prophase is promoted by NDJ1, MPS3, and CSM4 and is modulated by recombination
    • This paper uses in vivo imaging of GFP labelled chromosomal proteins to analyse rapid prophase movements (RPM) in yeast. These rapid movements are led by telomeres and depend on the proteins NDJ1, MPS3 and CSM4, which are also required for telomere bouquet formation. The authors suggest that crossover formation in yeast is regulated by a balance between RPMs, which disrupt recombinational interactions, and SC formation, which stabilises them.

    • This paper shows that wheat ASY1, an axial element component, is regulated by Ph1, the major locus controlling homoeologous pairing specificity. Deletion of Ph1 causes increased transcription of ASY1 and also affects the distribution of ASY1 localisation. This shows that Ph1 has downstream effects on synapsis, as well as at the stage of homologue recognition.

    • Human Cdk2 is a functional homolog of budding yeast Ime2, the meiosis-specific Cdk-like kinase
    • This paper shows that human Cdk2 can replace most functions of the meiosis-specific Ime2 in budding yeast. Ime2 is a Cdk-like kinase, although it lacks PSTAIRE and does not require a cyclin for activity (at least in vitro). It functions in promotion of pre-meiotic DNA replication and in regulation of the expression of the synapsis protein Hop1, as well as other early meiosis genes. On the contrary, Cdk1 is a functional homologue of Cdc28, a true cyclin-dependent kinase that functions in both mitosis and meiosis. Interestingly, Cdk2 has a dominant negative effect on entry into the cell cycle and may inhibit the function of Cdc28.
