    • note
    • This contribution is based on cross-national data collected in 2003, that is, the so-called Candidate Countries Eurobarometer. In this year most countries we will focus on were still labeled as EU candidate countries. In the years thereafter, most of them became new EU member states. However, to distinguish them from old member states, we will continue to label them as (former) EU candidate countries, which still holds for Turkey.
