    • note
    • In the opposite case where the scattering inelasticity is a significant fraction of the particle's energy, the steady-state momentum distribution in the presence of an external force can significantly depart from near-isotropy. The well-known case is that of particles (electrons) exchanging finite energy quanta (optical phonons) with the surrounding medium: when the energy gain from the electric force over a mean free path coincides with the energy lost to the medium, the particles are no longer drifting, but streaming, along the line of force. Then, the diffusion approximation (i.e. the possibility of truncating f after the first spherical harmonic) breaks down as f is strongly anisotropic in p space [15,16].

    • This accounts for the observation of Ref. [4] performed in a thermalized medium, where the origin of ∂ D / ∂ r was geometric albeit of a different nature (edge effect instead of bulk effect).
