Lee WC, Balu S, Cobden D, et al. Medication adherence and the associated health-economic impact among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus converting to insulin pen therapy: an analysis of third-party managed care claims data. Clin Ther 2006;28(10):1712-1725 •• This study reports the benefits provided by insulin injection pen devices for patients converting from the vial and syringe. Importantly, the delivery of insulin using a pen device increases patient adherence to treatment, including fewer adverse medical events, such as hypoglycaemia and the requirement of emergency treatment, compared with insulin administered by means of the vial and syringe. Together with the evidence of cost effectiveness, this gives a further indication that switching from the vial and syringe to an insulin pen can provide the patient and treating physician considerable advantages in terms of the management of diabetes. Limited joint mobility (LJM) of the hand in patients with diabetes mellitus: Relation to chronic complications
-
Starkman HS, Gleason RE, Rand LI, et al. Limited joint mobility (LJM) of the hand in patients with diabetes mellitus: relation to chronic complications. Ann Rheum Dis 1986;45(2):130-135 • This article highlights the prevalence of limited joint mobility, a condition associated with patients with diabetes. Impairments in manual dexterity in patients with diabetes can affect the patient's ability to self-inject insulin, and is an important consideration in the development of insulin delivery devices.
