Oxford Formularies

(Oxford)
-
H. E. Salter ed., Oxford Formularies, Oxford Historical Society, new ser., 4 (Oxford 1942), 112-78). One of the unpublished formularies dates from the later 13th century and relates to the see of Salisbury, and particularly to the time of John of Burton, who was precentor of the cathedral 1272-87 and served as official and keeper of the spirituality during the episcopal vacancies following the deaths of Bishops Robert de Wickhampton (1284) and Walter Scammel (1286). Burton had earlier, while archdeacon of Dorset, served similarly in the vacancy following bishop Walter de la Wyle's death (1271). Almost all the entries in the formulary are clearly based on original documents, with the names of people and places mostly represented only as initials; the reference to the consistory at Salisbury at this time is therefore reliable
