    • The in-phase and out-of-phase of the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in the hydrogen-bonded chain may also result in the doublet feature. However, for the C=O groups orientating in the same direction, their dipoles reinforce if they vibrate in-phase, and therefore bring about an increase in intensity and a decrease in frequency. And the out-of-phase vibration case will result in a decrease in intensity and an increase in frequency. The spectroscopic data in this study lie in contradiction to this prediction and therefore exclude the factor group splitting mechanism.
