    • A category A pension is contributory and in two parts: One is a basic state pension related to the number of qualifying years in working life and the second is an additional state pension dependent upon earnings, or deemed earnings, since April 1978. A category B pension is also contributory and payable by virtue of the earnings and qualifying years of spouse or civil partner.
