And see, for example, Ford's letter to R. A. Scott James, 6 April 1921, Scott James papers, Harry Ransom Centre, University of Texas at Austin, and to F. S. Flint, 18 October 1921, Flint papers, ibid. Hunt had earlier written to Scott James complaining that if Ford did not uphold the appearance of their union, she was but 'a cast-off mistress'. She supposed that was what she in fact was, and that Ford had protected himself without regard to the consequences for her or her social position. In her concern that the public record should not present her as a deserted wife, Bowen had something in common with Violet Hunt's obsession with public appearances when Ford was leaving her for Bowen, an obsession to which Bowen was sensitive at the time. Ford had informed his mother in July 1919 that he continued to appear at Hunt's parties at Bowen's request: 'she wishes to save Violet the mortification of appearing officially deserted'.
