1. The main argument of this article is levelled against Colin Leys’ view in his book. Underdevelopment in Kenya, (Heinemann, London, 1975), of a ‘continuing dependence on the Atrican petty-bourgeoisie and auxiliary bourgeoisie of foreign capital’.
2. The data on directorships and company holdings was collected by the author, partly for a 1976 report of the National Christian Council of Kenya on Who Controls Industry in Kenya?, which was in turn an up-dated version of a book with the same title published by East African Publishing House, Nairobi in 1968. This kind of information is available through published reports of the Registrar of Companies or can be looked up in the official Company Registry office in most African countries.
