    • C18 was obtained from Aldrich; C20 and C24 from Sigma. All were labeled 99% pure and were used as obtained. Our results were completely reproducible for samples from different sources, and upon cycling repeatedly through the melting point. As discussed in Ref. [5], these are strong indications against ascribing the layer to surface-active contaminants. The x-ray measurements, which show a sharply defined layer of uniform thickness closely correlated with n, virtually exclude the possibility of impurities which differ greatly in length from n.

    • This form is valid within the first Born approximation. However, for the present system an exact calculation using the full dynamical theory yields indistinguishable results.
