    • There are some general characteristics of all incantations dealing with the 'evil eye' within the Semitic world and even in Classical sources. Many examples from the Semitic world are recently provided by J. N. Ford, Ninety-Nine by the Evil Eye and One from Natural Causes, UF 30 (1998) 201-278, and for an example of baskania in Greek sources, cf. W. Brashear, Wednesday's Child is Full of Woe (Vienna 1998) 40. Nevertheless, Sumerian incantations are distinctive. While generally the 'evil eye' is either treated as an abstraction for 'envy' or 'jealousy', or as a demon, in Sumerian incantations of this type the 'igi hcombining breve belowul' appears as an hallucination of the patient's feelings of persecution and paranoia, personified as the face (igi) of an enemy
