    • As with the Jesuits and Kongzi, the role of European observers in elevating Rammohan to fatherhood needs to be kept in view, from the status he earned in the eyes of his earliest Christian interlocutors and Unitarian supporters to his elevation by the likes of Max Müller to the status of the first Indian practitioner of the comparative study of religion. Indeed, Müller's Biographical Essays (1883) was of immense importance for anointing several founders of modern Hinduism, including Rammohan, Keshub Chunder Sen, and Sri Ramakrishna - leading some to claim that Müller was himself in part responsible for Bengal's so-called renaissance; see Eric J.
